5 tips to extend the life of your henna

A natural henna design lasts on average 10 to 15 days, but a few simple habits can make the difference between a design that fades in a week and one that lasts its full time.

1. Leave the paste on as long as possible

Ideally, keep the henna paste on your skin for 4 to 6 hours — or even overnight. The longer the paste stays in contact with the skin, the deeper the pigment penetrates.

2. Avoid water for the first 12 hours

After removing the paste, don’t wet the area for at least 12 hours. Water interrupts the oxidation process that gives henna its deep colour.

3. Apply a natural balm

A blend of coconut oil and a few drops of lemon juice applied daily nourishes the skin and protects the design from friction.

4. Skip the exfoliants

Anything that accelerates cell renewal — scrubs, acids, pool chlorine — will fade your design faster.

5. Protect from friction

High-contact areas (palms, inner fingers) naturally fade faster. Wear gloves when doing dishes, avoid repeated rubbing.
